What it takes to build a career through success and setbacks

A successful career is not defined by one moment. It is shaped by how we respond to success, setbacks, and everything in between. The Master of Applied Finance and Wealth Management (MFWM) program students reflected on this idea with Vishal Thakur, Head HR at Tata Capital, in an engaging session on leadership and career growth.

Using stories from the 2007 T20 World Cup final, Vishal brought these ideas to life, encouraging students to look beyond the outcome and think about what moments of success and failure can teach us about our professional journeys.

Students explored how consistent performance can change perceptions, why recognition and respect are not always the same, and why reaching the top is only part of the journey. The stories also highlighted the importance of maturity in handling success and resilience in moving forward after setbacks.

The session encouraged students to think about the qualities that shape lasting careers — sound judgement, humility, self-awareness, adaptability, and the ability to learn from every experience. Rather than viewing success and failure as isolated moments, students were encouraged to see them as experiences that can influence how they grow as professionals and leaders.

Through an engaging and relatable discussion, students gained practical perspectives on navigating their careers with greater awareness, resilience, and a long-term mindset.
