What is Mental Health? What is Mental Health?

What is Mental Health?

  • Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being.
  • It affects how we think, feel, and act.
  • It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices.
  • Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

What is Emotional Well-being?

  • A positive sense of well-being enables an individual to be able to function in society and meet the demands of everyday life.
  • With emotional well-being, you can experience:
    • Healing – from stress, anxiety, depression, grief, and other issues
    • Change – to transform unhelpful patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving
    • Self-confidence – as you gain trust and belief in yourself
    • Growth – to live more authentically

Welcoming Diversity & Inclusion

  • What do we mean by Diversity?

The concept of diversity encompasses acceptance and respect. It means understanding that each individual is unique and recognising our individual differences. These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies. It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual.

  • What do we mean by Inclusion?

Inclusion is a state of being valued, respected and supported. It’s about focusing on the needs of every individual and ensuring the right conditions are in place for each person to achieve his or her full potential. Inclusion should be reflected in an organisation’s culture, practices and relationships that are in place to support a diverse workforce.

In simple terms, diversity is the mix; inclusion is getting the mix to work well together.

Facilitating Cross-Cultural Exchange

  • To facilitate Cross-Cultural Exchange, we organise Coffee Evenings with one specific cultural theme each time.
  • In the past, we have had a Latin-themed evening with Columbian coffee, traditional Latin food (our students prepared some delicacies), and cultural discussions.
  • We hope this initiative encourages students from other nationalities/cultures to lead similar Coffee Evenings which we would be happy to facilitate, and we call this initiative ‘Coffee, Culture & Conversations’ (C3).
  • We plan to have one such Coffee Evening every other week with a different cultural theme.

Peer Counselling and Support

This program allows interested students to develop interpersonal skills that help them towards self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship management, as well as empathy skills. It offers a new focus on challenges and solutions on how to understand and help one another.

This program also entails learning more about the science of Positive Psychology and designing initiatives around the same. The SP Jain Centre of Excellence for Happiness is a re-imagining of how individuals can best work and live together using core principles from the latest research findings from the Science of Happiness.

Wellness Wheel

  • The Wellness Wheel is a visual guide to better understand the seven dimensions or areas of an individual’s life that make up their overall health.
  • These dimensions are comprised of common characteristics, identities and behaviours.
  • Assessing needs in the seven areas can help you prevent future health problems and consequences by making healthier choices a habit and part of your everyday life.
